Spielberg on Big Island for filming
MUCH BUZZ has surrounded Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones," which recently finished
filming at Yale. The
New Haven Register reported that security was tight, and anyone who tried to take pictures was decidedly
unwelcome. But that did not prevent residents from catching a glimpse of the action. A friend who works
at
Yale told me, "New Haven was transformed." The crew dressed storefronts and displays to re-
create an earlier
era. They also removed stoplights and placed old- fashioned street lights along the road. Next up on
the big-
budget shooting schedule? The Big Island, where Spielberg arrived earlier this week.
WE SAID we would not report on "Bachelor" Andy Baldwin for a while, but several readers
continue to ask if
Baldwin and Tessa Horst are still together. Indeed, they were very much a couple at the Cholo's
2,000-meter
rough-water swim competition at Waimea Bay last Saturday, where both participated in a challenging event
that traversed the bay twice. Baldwin, 30, finished fifth in his age group in an impressive 31:28. Horst,
26,
placed 19th in her age group in 44:11. After the competition, they blended easily with fellow athletes,
sporting
uncombed hair as they lingered after the event to munch on muffins and trail mix.
On another note (for the ladies), Baldwin has always made an effort to be fully clothed for interviews
with the
media, but a Speedo keeps few secrets, and he looks even stronger than he did on television.
IT'S AN ODD venue for a beach show, but Court TV seems to be having good luck with the theme. The
success of "Beach Patrol: Miami" and "Beach Patrol: San Diego" prompted the network
to follow Hawaii
lifeguards on the job. The eight-episode series is part of the network's R.E.D. lineup: "Real,
Exciting and
Dramatic!" According to press materials, "this fast-paced, hard-driving series will feature
daring rescues on
some of the world's most beautiful and sometimes most dangerous beaches, including Waikiki, Sandy, Maka
Pu, Pipeline, Waimea Bay and Sunset." Maka Pu?
We trust the lifeguards, who work with local firefighters and police officers to solve problems in and
out of the
water, will reveal a heroic but honest side of Hawaii to the 88 million viewers who tune in to Court
TV. "Beach
Patrol: Honolulu" premieres Monday at 8 p.m., with back-to- back half-hour episodes.
THE FIRST wave of cruiser-class boats is under way in the Transpacific
Yacht Race. But the fastest vessels --
including Roy Disney's Pyewacket and Morning Light -- don't start until Sunday. Because they
will travel into
Hawaii waters, Disney invited Kahu Daniel Akaka Jr. to Long Beach today to bless Disney's boats
before
they launch.
LOOK FOR Josh Holloway (Sawyer on "Lost") to emerge from Hawaii
waters in a new commercial for
Davidoff Cool Water, a fragrance for men, according to Sky News Australia. Yes, he will be shirtless.
