It was lights,
camera, interview as a video team from Roy Disney Productions came to the Vallejo
campus to chat with Cal Maritime cadet Piet vanOs. Piet is one of 15 crewmembers selected by
the
Disney organization from over 500 applicants, to serve on what will be the youngest crew of sailors
ever
to enter the famed TransPac open ocean race from Los Angeles to Honolulu next summer aboard
Disney’s 52-foot racer Morning Light.
The campus visit was arranged in order to get footage of vanOs during classes, including a morning of
training work aboard one of the Academy’s tugboats, and a personal interview. Similar on-shore
visits
with other young crew members from around the country will be edited together with footage of pre-race
training and the race itself next July.
vanOs will delay his graduation, spending the spring 2007 semester in Hawaii training with his fellow
crewmembers for the big event. The completed documentary is scheduled for global distribution in 2008.
